Locate all underground utilities and make sure you don't
damage them or restrict future access. (telephone, water,
sewer, septic, electric, cable, etc.)
Obtain a permit, if one is required, for your project.
Make sure your project is permissible under your community
covenants.
Make sure your project doesn’t surpass height limit in your
community.
Make sure you maintain proper set-back requirements on
your property boundaries.
Make sure your project obeys all local building codes.
Make sure the design, construction, and location of the
gazebo add value and appeal to the home.
Use materials that accent your home and deck.
(eg. handrails, spindles, decking, shingles, etc.)
Will the gazebo need electricity? (eg. ceiling fan, lighting)
Will the gazebo be used for grilling/cooking? If so, make sure
the design allows adequate space for the equipment.
Will the gazebo have built-in seating?
What type of lumber will be used for the decking?
(eg. 5/4" boards, ChoiceDek, 2" x 6", etc.)
What lumber species is most suited for the climate conditions
of the area? (eg. treated, cedar, redwood, ChoiceDek, etc.)
Which direction will the decking run? (eg. diagonal, parallel,
herringbone, etc.)
What type of hardware will be used? (eg. deck screws,
hot dipped galvanized nails, lag screws, Iag bolts, etc.)
Will the gazebo need screening?
Will the gazebo require railing?
Gazebo should be located where accessibility is convenient.
Location of Gazebo should have adequate drainage.
Try locating the gazebo in a spot that is shaded from
the sun during the hot months and exposed to the sun
during the cooler months, This will help regulate the
temperature inside the gazebo.
To save the lawn, consider adding a path to the gazebo.
