POLE BUILDINGS
Locate all underground utilities and make sure you don’t
damage them or restrict future access. (telephone, water,
sewer, septic, electric, cable, etc.)
Will the building need doors? If so, make sure to select a
style of door that functionally meets the requirements
of the building.
Obtain a permit, if one is required, for your project.
Make sure your project is permissible under your
community covenants.
The size of the building, the style of roof, the number of
doors, and the choice of siding should all complement the
existing home and landscaping. A building must be as
attractive as it is practical.
POLE
BUILDINGS
Make sure your project doesn’t surpass height limit in
your community.
Make sure you maintain proper set-back requirements
on your property boundaries.
What lumber species is most suited for the climate
conditions of the area? (eg. treated, cedar, redwood,
ChoiceDek, etc.)
What type of hardware will be used?
Make sure your project obeys all local building codes.
Use materials that accent your home and building.
What will the building be used for?
Will the building need ventilation?
Will the building need electricity?
(i.e. power outlets, lighting, etc.)
Check your budget. A new building often leads to a new
driveway or turnaround area.
Try locating the building in a spot that is shaded from the
sun during the hot months and exposed to the sun during
the cool months. This will help regulate the temperature
inside the shed.
Will the building need plumbing?
(i.e. hose bibb, sink, floor drain, etc.)
Be sure building is adequately sized to store equipment
and materials.
Building should be located where accessibility is convenient.
Pick a flat location if possible.
Most electrical codes require all major appliances to have
their own circuits.
Location of building should have adequate drainage.
Workstations should have “ground fault” electrical outlets.
Windows, entryways and/or skylights facing south provide
the greatest amount of natural lighting.
