SHEDS
SHEDS
Locate all underground utilities and make sure you don’t
damage them or restrict future access. (telephone, water,
sewer, septic, electric, cable, etc.)
Obtain a permit, if one is required, for your project.
Make sure your project is permissible under your
community covenants.
Make sure your project doesn’t surpass height limit
in your community.
Make sure you maintain proper set-back requirements
on your property boundaries.
Make sure your project obeys all local building codes.
The design, construction, and location of the shed
should add value and appeal to the home.
Will the shed need electricity? (eg. power outlets, lighting, etc.)
Will the shed need plumbing? (eg. hose bibb, sink,
floor drain, etc.)
If not installing Heating / AC, try locating the shed in a
spot that is shaded from the sun during the hot months
and exposed to the sun during the cooler months. This
will help regulate the temperature inside the shed.
Windows or skylights facing south provide the greatest
amount of natural lighting.
To save the lawn, consider adding a path to the shed.
(eg. paved, rock, timber, etc.)
If budget allows, it is much easier and less expensive to
expand the shed design beyond the space needed today,
versus having to add-on or remodel later.
The size of the shed, the style of roof, the number of
doors and the choice of siding should all complement
the existing home and landscaping. A shed must be
as attractive as it is practical.
Shed should be located where accessibility is convenient.
Pick a flat location if possible.
Build an oversized header above the entry door in case a
larger door is needed (for larger equipment) in the future.
What lumber species is most suited for the climate
conditions of the area? (eg. treated, cedar, redwood,
ChoiceDek, etc.)
What type of foundation is needed? (i.e. slab, skid, pier, etc.)
Location of shed should have adequate drainage.
Will the building need ventilation?
Use materials that accent your home (eg. siding, shingles,
windows, shutters, guttering, etc.)
